Grip socks for barre class.
Barre classes mix ballet-inspired work at the barre with mat sequences, usually barefoot or in grip socks. Here's what to know before you go.
Do you need grip socks for barre?
Many barre studios ask for grip socks, and some sell them at the front desk. Policies vary, so check your studio's website or booking app. If they're required, many studios sell pairs at the front desk, but check ahead.
Barre socks vs Pilates socks
There's no strict difference. Barre involves a lot of time on the balls of your feet (relevé) and on a studio floor, so it's worth checking whether the grip pattern reaches the front of the foot. Pilates reformer work adds the footbar and carriage. Many grip socks are sold for both; look at where the grip sits and pick what matches the classes you take.
What to look for
- Where the grip sits. Check whether it covers the areas you load in relevé and floor work.
- A cuff that stays up, so you aren't adjusting between sets.
- A toe style you like. Closed-toe keeps feet covered and warm; toeless leaves toes free.
- Calm colours if you'd like them to go with most class outfits.
What to pack for your first class
- Grip socks (and a spare pair if you have back-to-back classes)
- A water bottle
- Comfortable, fitted clothing
- A small bag for used socks
Caring for barre socks
Washing cold, inside out, and air-drying is generally gentler on silicone grip. Heat and fabric softener can be hard on it.
